Central Falls High: Proving the Doubters Wrong

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I.__Four years ago the nations attention was on Central Falls High School for all the wrong reasons. All of the teachers were fired and the school was viewed as a failure. Four years later, the school has undergone a major transformation and students are motivated more than ever to graduate and prove the doubters wrong. Despite challenges that students and faculty face every day, they are ready to show the world what the Warriors can really do.

Now, morale is improving and steadily increasing. With the help of the staff and their peers, CFHS students are more than prepared to take on the world of higher education.

A bright road ahead for young women in Central Falls

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I.__Central Falls made national headlines in 2010 for its failing school system and radical education reform. Over the past four years the quality of education and the quality of life has improved for Central Falls High School students. Although the city has overcome many obstacles, there are still bumps in the road ahead. While the city’s teenage pregnancy rate is constantly decreasing, it is still the highest in the state of Rhode Island.

The young women at Central Falls High School face challenges each day, in and outside the classroom, but their future looks bright because of their ambition and perseverance.

Mainstreaming At Central Falls High School

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I.__Back in 2010, Central Falls High School led education reform in the nation when they successfully adopted the transformation model proposed by the Obama Administration. Four years later, they lead yet again as the formerly troubled high school embarks on a bold new plan to integrate special education students into mainstream classrooms. At CFHS, the future looks bright.

English as a Second Language in Central Falls

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. __Central Falls High School works to educate their students in learning the English language as a part of the English as a Second Language program. Due to the town having Latino population of 60 percent, learning English is essential for the students so they can adapt to their new home. The students work hard to learn English while maintaining their heritage.

Central Falls High School Chess Team: one of the best

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I.__It has been over four years since Central Falls High School made national news. The decision to fire all the teachers at CFHS was certainly controversial, and though it seems to have benefited the school, many stories were overshadowed by the media. Despite its previously low-achieving scores, the school’s chess team has cemented itself among the best in the nation, competing against some of the brightest minds of the upcoming generation.

Sashaying with purpose

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. __ Every Thursday, the cafeteria at Central Falls High School gets a little more fabulous, thanks to the Fashionistas. A for-credit, after-school program run by local photographer Rachel Stern, the Fashionistas learn make-up, outfits and photography. They recently walked the runway at an AS220 event called “The Will to Adorn,” a national showcase of African American fashion cultivated by the Smithsonian Institution. True to the words above their usual meeting space, the Fashionistas “walk with purpose” wherever they go.
